We set out on a walk today, my faithful dog and I,
The final walk, a last farewell, our time to say goodbye.
I made this dog a promise on the day he came to me,
To love him well, provide for him, and one day set him free.
We fool ourselves, and tell our hearts that day will never come,
But when we face the moment, it is clear what must be done.
For in exchange he offered me the greatest gifts I’ve known,
And I am changed forever by the love that he has shown.
His heart was pure and selfless, his devotion strong and true.
And when his time was over, there was one thing left to do.
I laid with him and held him as he made his final run,
My old dog’s soul ascending in the warm November sun.
This is the hardest thing I’ll face, a final act of love,
The shooting star I held so close now shines down from above.
We set out on a walk today, my faithful dog and I.
Two best friends bound forever, by a love that will not die.
Offered in loving memory of Nigel Buggers.
A beautiful tribute to your boy! Thank you for sharing.
We lost our second Service Dog this past February. Our first was a Chocolate Lab, Bosco. Ginger was our second, a Golden Retriever with a heart of purest gold. Both lived to be 14 years of age. Ginger left us on Feb. 4th, 2014, and we still turn our heads thinking we hear her or feel her in the room.
Next week we will be joined by Brandy Alexandra, an English Cream Golden Retriever, only a pup in age. But we will train her with the help of others with experience. And our hearts will wrap around hers, as they have done with the two before her.
The tears flow when I read your goodbye, and we know the pain will be fresh even years from now. Thank you for sharing.
Neil – you certainly must have increased sales of Kleenex with your beautiful and sensitive postings. <3
So lovely Neil. Thank you so much for sharing Nigel with the world. We were all so lucky to know him. I know it was incredibly hard for you but of course you did what was best for him. The right thing is often the hardest. Thinking of you and your family!
Very beautiful and so sad and so true….we’re still in shock from losing our two family members and it’s really hard to adapt to the quiet household.
I just plain miss them.

Beautiful tribute. ♥ Visiting from Tales and Tails, where I read the news about Nigel. So very sorry to hear that he’s crossed the bridge. Nigel is running in a lot of good company there, as I’m sure so many others have said. They are such a sweet blessing in our lives. My sincerest condolences to you and Mrs. Neil.
