America’s favorite breed has earned its standing with good reason. Labs are even tempered and good natured, athletic, rugged and loyal to a fault. And they are adventurous – they travel well and love new places and faces.

Are they perfect? Nope. Be prepared to donate some furniture to the teething stage unless you can supervise full time, because these dogs love to chew when they are young. Also keep in mind that they are known for retaining puppy habits and behavior up to the age of two or three, so your new Lab may take a while to blossom into the calm, easy dog that you have come to know as you’ve met other examples of the breed. That said, for anyone who loves to spend time outdoors, this is a wonderful companion breed.
Because they are so popular, Labs are also frequently dumped. The aforementioned lengthy puppy stage requires more patience than many are able to muster, and it’s not uncommon to see young Labs taking up space at shelters all over the country. Sadly, the popularity of this breed also works against it. The good news is that if you can find a young Lab in a shelter, chances are many of it’s puppyhood antics are behind it. In other words, don’t buy a Lab puppy – adopt one and let someone else do the hard work for you. Your shoes and sofa will thank you!
